Wardrobe Detox : A Carefully Curated Closet for 2019
Happy New Year guys! Um, so at what date do we stop saying Happy New Year anyway? I get all sorts of confused about that. Anyway, for the sake of this article I’ll say it because it’s my first time writing in the New Year and this post has lots to do with how I can help you guys have an easier time with your current wardrobe in 2019!
Marie Condo’s “Tidying Up” is all the rage right now! Her book has sold millions of copies and now with the new documentary on Netflix, everyone’s finding themselves “Tidying Up"! Have you guys seen it/ read it? I did a post on Instagram and many of you commented that you have and are trying to follow her tips! It’s no secret that each New Year most people aim to get more organized and in a world where we are constantly told “you deserve more” many are choosing to get by with less and I’m totally on board.
One of thy favorite services I offer is doing a Wardrobe Detox or Closet Detox. I highly recommend doing a wardrobe detox when you hire me so that I can see what you have in your closet before bringing new pieces in, and also to make sure those pieces should be there and align with the style we’re trying to help you achieve.
I’ve given you all a little run down before on social media as to why this part of the process is so important and what its like to go through a wardrobe detox with me, but for those of you that are new here, let me break it down…
After we’ve done an initial consult and we’ve nailed down what style works with your life I meet you at your house ready to do some heavy clean up! I bring bags, boxes, charts (like the one pictured in this post), check lists and a camera. Together, we go through every piece of clothing you own following my chart to decide if it belongs in your closet. If it goes back in we photograph it and I add it to a list of items you currently have that work (so we can be careful not to duplicate that item and so I can create looks with it). It’s not as cut and dry as deciding whether to Keep or Get rid of something. There will be some items that need tailoring, mending, or a trail separation period to see if it needs to stay or go.
Some of you may be thinking…well you already gave me your Wardrobe Detox chart (below); so why should I hire you? My answer: I really do so much more than just help you decide, but I recognize that some of you like to do things yourself; so for those of you that do this is my gift to you! I just ask you to continue to show up here and social media, because your support is e v e r y t h i n g to me!
Who can benefit from this service? People looking to start over completely. People looking to be more organized with their clothing. People looking to save time deciding what to wear. People looking to be more intentional with their clothing purchases and I could go on and on, but I’m especially here for the people who have a difficult time letting go. I do believe there is a place for “sentimental clothing”, but not everything falls into that category. A pair of size 4 jeans from High School that has no other significance other than you wanting to fit into them again one day are not sentimental. Don’t torture yourself like that! Having something that is way too small for you does not motivate you, it taunts you. It says, “you can no longer wear me and I am wasting space in your closet where you will continue to look at me every time you get dressed and I will continue to make you feel less than you are as long as I am here.” There are better ways to motivate yourself! I am all about only keeping clothes and adding clothes that make you feel good about yourself NOW which will in turn motivate you to be the badass that you are and accomplish whatever it is you want to accomplish. If that is being a size 4 than great! You do you sis! I cannot wait to take you shopping for some size 4 jeans when you reach your goal, because that is a healthy, less anxiety producing way to motivate yourself!
Now picture this. You go to get ready in the morning and open your closet to find all wearable items that appeal to you, that you know exactly what goes with each piece and that you have several outfits each piece works with, and that each item fits and highlights the best parts of you! Sigh, I don’t care who you are, you know that would be awesome!
